Check out your duty free allowances when flying from Southampton Eastleigh Airport. This 'Southampton Information Duty Free Amounts' guide will help you to shop both tax free and duty free at Southampton Airport.

Duty Free Allowances & Tax Free Shopping ...

Duty free at Southampton Airport is available to any passenger travelling either outside of the EU or International long haul. Taking advantage of your duty free allowances will mean big, additional savings.

To shop tax free is for any passenger travelling within the EU, and again International long haul.

Regulations are stipulated by UK Customs, so it is advised that passengers read the following unofficial information on duty free allowances, taking note of prohibited and restricted from being brought into the UK from any destination.

Tax Savings & The EU ...

For passengers shopping tax free at Southampton Airport, it's as if the Value Added Tax at 17.5% has yet to be added. Tax free prices are shown on the price tag, both before and after tax to highlight your saving.

Do note however, that you may be required to pay tax on purchases when arriving outside the EU, or when bringing the purchases back into the UK. Goods from newsagents, bookstores, pharmacies and goods with duty paid are however excluded.

For those passengers able to take advantage of their Duty Free allowances, extra savings above the 17.5% discount are available. These Countries are currently in the European Union:

UK Customs Allowances ...

Passengers will find that their tax free and duty free allowances vary depending on each passenger’s final destination.

The following items can be bought into the UK, without incurring Customs duty, when travelling from the EU:
  • 250g of tobacco, 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars

  • 2 Litres of still table wine, or fortified or sparkling wine, or other liqueurs or 1 Litre of alcoholic beverages stronger than 22%

  • 50g of perfume and 250ml of toilet water

  • Other goods including souvenirs up to the value of £145

  • Goods obtained duty and tax paid in the EU are unlimited
Goods being brought into an EU Country that already have had tax paid, no additional tax or duty will have to be paid.

Any goods brought into the UK must strictly be transported by the passenger and must be for the passenger's own use i.e. own consumption and gifts.

Any goods of any kind, not just alcohol or tobacco products, brought into the UK for resale or for payment will be considered as for a commercial use.

Should Customs believe the goods have been brought into the UK for a commercial use a Customs Officer will ask a series of questions and make several checks. The Officer will also consider whether the goods have been concealed, or whether they have been visibly displayed.

A Customs Officer is likely to ask about the type and quantity of goods that have been bought, why they were bought and how much was paid, how often the passenger travels and how much alcohol and tobacco the passenger normally consumes.

The following, for example, will raise concerns:
  • 110 Litres of beer
  • 90 Litres of wine
  • 10 Litres of spirits
  • 20 Litres of fortified wine (i.e. port or sherry)
  • 3,200 cigarettes
  • 200 cigars
  • 400 cigarillos
  • 3kg tobacco
Goods considered for a commercial use will be seized and not returned. So also will goods caught being sold. It's a serious offence that could mean up to seven years in prison.

When purchasing or importing large quantities of alcohol or tobacco products into other Countries check with the Country’s Authorities before you purchase the goods. Countries can require you to carry documents covering the goods in your possession, and many Countries have their own laws regarding importing goods.

NOTE: The following EU Countries have their own restrictions and limits on alcohol and tobacco product:

  Special Restrictions
  Czech Republic 200 cigarettes, or
250g smoking tobacco, or
50 cigars, or
100 cigarillos
  Estonia 200 cigarettes, or
250g of smoking tobacco*
Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia & Slovenia 200 Cigarettes*
* From these Countries, there is no limit on other tobacco products as long as they are for the passengers own consumption.
