Southampton Airport brings both pros and cons for those living in the surrounding areas, from a large amount of business and generation of jobs, to air and noise pollution.

Airport redevelopment at Southampton is planned for the future, with the announcement of continued growth plans in the 2003 Government White Paper.

More unofficial information about living in the area...

Following the Government White Paper, Southampton Airport has been working on a master plan for the airport development, which outlines how the airport will expand between now and 2015.

Southampton International currently serves approximately 1.5 million passengers a year, and the master plan predicts that this number will rise to approximately 3 million passengers a year by 2015.

Looking to the future, the developments are likely to include further developments to the terminal building with extra check-in capability, new aircraft parking stands, new taxiways, airport car parking and more.

Air and noise pollution is therefore a concern for the local Southampton community.  The proposed airport expansion will come alongside improved operations and landscaping to minimise the effect., and environmental concerns will also be carefully considered.

The airport expansion however will also create more jobs, act as a hub for regular flyers and also improve Southampton’s tourist trade, and so could have a positive effect on the local house prices.
