The Creation Of Time Zones ...

Originally each city around the World, over 120 years ago, set their own time according to when the sun was at it highest in the sky - when it was the time would be set at noon.

So, even when cities neighboured each other they still set their clocks differently, for instance, in New York City it would be 6pm and in Boston it would be 6:12pm.

This timing system worked well, however when communication and transportation became popular this small difference between cities became unpractical.

So, Canadian railway planner and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming, with the railroad companies of that time, thought about uniformed time zones and started to use these in 1883.

Then, in 1884, the idea became very popular and it was globally agreed at a conference in Washington, D.C. that the World's time would be set in this way.

The 24 hours of the day mirrored the 24 time zones which meant it was much easier to set the transport and communication channels for all to follow. In fact, these time zones are still in place today in over 99% of the World's Countries.
