Good preparation Is Key ...

Good preparation - like home security, careful packing and knowing your luggage allowances - will help for a great flight when leaving Southampton Airport. This guide helps you with a myriad of things so read on for advice on...

Before Leaving Home ...

Don't run out of the door and leave your home unsafe with the threat of a burglary. Or even coming back home to gone off food in the fridge, wilted pot plants and stacks of post on your doorstep.

Secure your home whilst you're away as almost half of all break-ins happen when a flat or house is left empty for periods of time.

It's easy, and simple:

  • Cancel any milk and newspapers deliveries that built up on your doorstep are a give-away you're not home

  • Delay ordering anything that will be sent by Recorded Deliver, it will be returned to sender by the Post Office if not collected after a week

  • Cancel any meetings that clash with your trip away

  • Ask a friend, close-by family member or good neighbour to pop by and move post from your door and water your plants/garden

  • Cook any perishable items in your fridge, or throw them away

  • Be extra safe by turning off all your electrical sockets like your TV (it will save energy and money too)

  • Turn off your central heating in the Summer, along with the hot water. In the Winter reduce your heating temperature and time

  • Make sure your pets are well looked after by a house sitter, or if in a kennel or cattery, pack their basket, toys and favourite treats

Home Security Tips ...

Secure your home and contents. Just imagine the devastation of returning home with your worldly goods turned upside down and missing. Our precious and valuable asset needs protecting - here's how:

  Top Ten Security Tips
  1. Automatic Lighting Fix timers to your lights, these go on and off at different times of the day and will confuse any potential burglars by looking like someone is home.
  2. Post Get post cleared away from your doorstep by asking a friend or neighbour to pop by. Otherwise built up post make it obvious the house has been left empty.

Royal Mail operate a Keepsafe service that holds your mail for up to two months while you are away.

3. Deliveries Don't forget to cancel any deliveries such as milk or newspapers.
4. Baggage Tags: Only write your home address on your baggage tag when checking-in for your return flight. Otherwise you are advertising to the 'World' you are away on your travels for a few weeks. .
5. House Checking: Arrange for family, friends or neighbours to stagger house visits so that the home looks lived in.

Ask neighbours to park their spare cars on your drive way. Get your house checkers to draw and pull your curtains sporadically - again confusing burglars.

In case of an emergency leave your contact details with someone at home.
6. Neighbourhood Watch: Visit www.neighbourhoodwatch.net to see if one operates in your area and to see about joining.
7. Valuable Items: You could leave important documents or small valuables with your Bank, in their safe. Or ask trusted friends and family to look after whilst you're away.

Don't display any desirable electrical equipment like televisions, stereos and DVD players from windows.

And check your home and contents insurance hasn't expired!
8. Alarm:  Arrange for someone you trust to be an additional key holder whilst you are away in case the alarm Security Company need to contact anyone in emergency.

9. Outdoor Storage: Valuable items like mountain bikes, golf clubs and power tools normally stored in your garage or shed could be moved indoors just while you are away.
10. Locks: Do check that all doors and windows securely closed and locked.

If you would like a home security inspection call your local police force, as some check your home and offer security improvements.

Packing Tips...

Your baggage will need to conform to the airline's luggage allowances. You must also give thought to what you have packed and what you will need on the flight.

You can normally find the luggage allowance on your flight ticket - do check and don't assume as some weights vary between each airline.

It's advised to check with your airline if you intend to take large amounts of luggage. Likewise, if you need to travel with outsized or large luggage.

As a rule, bags must be no more than 70lbs/32kg or less in weight.  Should your luggage weigh more you'll need to re-pack your luggage into smaller bags. You will also be charged a fine for travelling with the excess luggage. Or, you will have to discard some the contents - this will be lost and destroyed, not saved until your return.

By checking with your airline in advance will save you time and any embarrassing inconvenience.

As directed by the Government, airlines will ask a number of questions regarding your main baggage and hand luggage, like who packed the bags, if anyone has asked you to carry something for them etc.

By visiting the Security section of this website you'll find out more about the security checks and questions involved in flying.
