| When taking your mobile phone abroad contact your Network provider about the following: |

- Ask your Network provider to enabled your mobile phone for 'international roaming' - NB this can take up to 14 days
- Ask if your handset will work in the country you're travelling to, as if , for instance, you're going to America you'll need a tri-band handset
- Ask how much International roaming will cost on your current tariff - NB they are much more expensive than calls made in and to the UK
- Ask if there are any deals relating specifically to the Country you are going to, or if there re any new tariffs that include overseas calls

| It may be your Network provider can offer you a tariff where cheaper calls abroad for a monthly fee are included. Make sure you also check how long you will be tied into this contract for and if you will travel enough to make full use of it. |

Alternatively look into purchasing an International SIM card that will slot into your phone (replacing your current SIM card for the duration of your trip).
International SIM cards can be purchased at International airports and some UK retailers. Check to see if your International SIM card has an expiry date and if so that it isn't before you travel. |

| You'll need to pack an electrical adapter for your phone charger if taking your mobile phone abroad. |

After your arrival simply turn on your phone as normal. Your mobile phone will then automatically switch itself into a local phone transmitter, allowing you to make and receive overseas calls.
Your mobile phone on holiday will think it's still based in the UK - what happens is that it's routed via the UK for all calls, even if you are for example in France, calling a UK friend also in France! Your call travels a huge 1,800 mile trip. Hence why overseas call charges can be so much. Be aware also that your friend receiving your call will also incur a charge for taking the call. |

In the case of losing, or having your mobile phone on holiday stolen, take a note of your mobile's IMEI/serial number. Keep this with a note of your mobile number, along with the telephone number of your Network provider's customer services dept. (including UK dialling code). Keep these details separate from your mobile.
This then allows you to contact your Network provider to cancel or block your phone immediately.
